June Meeting: Aviation Wings & Insignia of World War 1

Photos furnished by Greg Wicks

The program for the ITTHC June meeting was on Army Aviation wings & insignia of “The Great War to End All Wars” later to become know as World War 1 after the second one got rolling.

The local collector had an OUTSTANDING assortment of World War 1 Army Aviation wings. Most were Sterling Silver and a few had gold overlay on them. The collection included pilots wings, the extremely rare bomber & balloonist wings, and others. As with Wally, I have never seen any of the devices dug by detectorist in our area. I have seen at least a half dozen World War 1 identification disks (Dog Tags) that were dug. The best on being an ID disk for a Corporal in the 1st U.S. Aero Squadron that the late ITTHC member Bill Scott found in the Yale, Oklahoma area.

A big Thanks to the local collector for the very educational program. If you missed this program you missed a good presentation of some very rare World War 1 Army Aviation wings. Scroll down for a few photos of the collection.
